About us

The Wood Shop is run by Somerset Wood Recycling, a community interest company in Weston-super-Mare.

We started back in 2006 when founder, Tristan Tudor, read an article about Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling and thought “hmm, we could do something like that in Weston”.

Having grown up in Weston-super Mare, Tristan was keen to help the community as well as the environment. That’s why, from the outset, SWR offered work-based training to local people whose lives are not "quite right". Many early volunteers are now full time members of staff.

The early days of the project were tough, though! The first van, affectionately remembered, broke down on the way to the very first wood collection. But, against the odds, Somerset Wood Recycling has evolved into a sustainable business, helping people through the manufacture of bespoke handmade furniture while supplying the local community with reasonably priced re-purposed and sustainable timber.

Volunteers

As well as fully-fledged staff, we have around 25 regular volunteers who make a vital contribution to Somerset Wood Recycling.
